Chapter 7: Healing the Fourth Chakra

The fourth, heart or Anahata, chakra is located right in the center of the chest, around the area (and just above) of the heart. It is represented by mammals and human life and is associated with our emotional heart and our feelings. You will have noticed by now that all of the lower chakras relate to the self in one form or another, either our most primitive feelings and associations; moving on towards our feelings of self-satisfaction, personal fulfillment, and confidence; or now towards others in the truest sense: that of affection and compassion.

Our fourth chakra influences how we relate to others and other beings in the world, whether through joy and acceptance or through pain and fear. As such, it dictates our connection to nature, to the plant world, and to our families and others. It is the heart chakra where the famous ‘Christ energy’ or our unconditional acceptance and joy in others arise. Emotions associated with this chakra are compassion, love, forgiveness, empathy, trust, our sense of emotional equilibrium, and being at ease with life. If we have a strong heart chakra, then we may feel a strong calling towards humanitarian ends.

If the heart chakra is out of balanced or maligned, then we may physically suffer from respiratory or lung problems, as well as heart burn or other disorders of the cardiovascular system. The most obvious symptom of problems with this chakra is, however, emotional heartache, depression, and feelings of pervasive emptiness. Any sort of problems to do with love, such as feelings of being unloved, unworthy, or being emotionally unstable, are due to this chakra.
